Wolf VS Wolf

 Kia Ora Bloggers

In Yellowstone wolves were reintroduced 1990 which had a very positive impact on the environment and helped all the plants and nature regenerate.

However, in France wolves were attacking all of farmers animals (mainly sheep) so they got hunted all of the wolves until extinction.

Overall I think wolves are great creatures, they are smart and very unique animals.

Who's side are you on? See you next time I post. Byeee.

How Wolves Saved Yellowstone National Park.

Kia Ora Bloggers

This week we have been learning about wolves and the impact they had on Yellowstone national park in 1995.

Here are some facts:

I made this Yellowstone national park in minecraft using minecraft education edition. Yellowstone national park is placed in the USA it is a lot bigger than this. So I don't think I could make the entire thing in a week.

As you can see I have a lot of trees, animals and caves.

In Yellowstone National Park, in America, wolves were  eradicated from the environment. This had a  detrimental effect on the land as the elk were taking over, eating the shrubs and damaging the environment. The National Park was becoming barren and exposed.

In 1995, wolves were reintroduced into the park where they began a trophic cascade. This is where other species benefit from their presence and the environment flourishes and regenerates .

Because of the wolves in the park, the elk weren’t grazing by the rivers as they could be easily hunted. Some of them were killed for food by the wolves and the elk population slowed With less elk, the trees could regenerate, and in some places their growth quintupled . More trees meant more migratory birds arrived, as well as song birds, and more trees meant more beavers and otters. Bears returned to the area as there were berries and carrion to eat. The carrion that the wolves left behind was attracting rodents and hawks.

The reintroduction of wolves also affected the course of the rivers as the banks became more stable and so they meandered less. Having wolves back in the park had a very positive impact on Yellowstone National Park

Here are so pictures of my world:

Have you heard of the Yellowstone national park? See you next time I post,Byeeee :)

3...2...1... Drop!!

 Kia Ora Bloggers

Today we had lots of fun.We made parachutes and I made mine with two of my best friends Catherine and Brittney.

The challenge was to make a parachute to hold 2 wing nuts, kind of like how spaceships come to a stop. I had a lot of fun making my parachute with my friends.

What we did for our first parachute : For our first parachute we made it with Fabric,Twine,News Paper and Tape. I had a lot of fun make this first one but it didn't work so we made a second one.

What we did for our second parachute: For our second we made it out of Paper Towels,String,Tape and used our string to put through the wing nuts and used tape to hold them together. We ran out of twine so we had to use blue string.

Here is my final product.Enjoy.

Have you ever made a parachute? Do you like our parachute? See you next time I post. Byeee

Whats Our Rule??

Kia Ora Bloggers

On Tuesday Tayla B and I have been learning how to guess the rules of different equations in math and then we had to make our own.

How to guess the rule
By guessing if you need to add (like x 3 + 8) or to take away. (like - 8) you look at the numbers on both sides and you try to make a rule that works for all the numbers (only if you have multiple numbers, but it is fine if you only have on number.)

Try to guess what the rule is of this equation and fill in the blank with what you think the rule is.

PS it is. X___ +___

Try and figure it out. 11___ 38
Comment what you think it is.

I had a lot of fun guessing the rules and then making my own on a slide .

Here is my math.Hope you enjoy.

Do you understand how to guess the rule on questions now? Have you made anything like this before?
See you next time I post. Byeeee.

Southern Lights Artwork

Kia Ora Bloggers

Today we have been learning about the southern lights, and we decided made some art on them.

The name 'Aurora' comes from the Latin word for sunrise or the Roman goddess of dawn. Auroras are associated with the solar winds that flow past Earth. These winds flow out from the Sun and contain plasma particles (ionized gas) which gets pulled into the Earth's magnetic pole fields.

As they accelerate towards the Earth, collisions occur between these ion particles and nitrogen and oxygen atoms in our atmosphere, releasing energy in the form of amazing aurora lights.

Here are the steps to make the southern lights artwork.

1. Hold your plain A4 paper landscape and rip a mountain like shape across it. This will be used to mask off the hills. Mask this onto the bottom of your black piece of paper with tape.

2.  Then dip your toothbrush into some of the white acrylic paint, and then run your fingers through the bristles of the toothbrush to flick paint over your black piece of paper. This will create the background stars.

3.  While the stars are drying, use your ripped card and colour the top ripped edge of it in with your different coloured pastels. Make sure you change the colour every few centimetres.

4.  When the paint is dry, place the chalked paper onto your black paper. Now run your finger through the chalk upwards towards the stars. This should smudge the coloured chalk from the plain paper onto your picture.

5.  Mix a small amount of yellow and white together. Make sure you use more white than yellow, you want it to only have a tint of yellow in it.  Using your tooth pick or the end of a paint brush dot in the Matariki constellation.

Here is my final product,enjoy.

Have you seen the southern lights?See you next time.Bye.

The Three Little Pigs Fractured Fairy tale

Kia Ora Bloggers

For the last couple of weeks we have been making fractured fairy tales, I chose to make mine on the three little pigs. If you don't know what a fractured fairy tale is, it is basically where you take an original story like Cinderella and you change something i it like, instead of being a ball it was a disco or instead of dropping her shoe she dropped her phone instead.

I had a lot of fun making my fractured fairy tale although it was a bit challenging because you have to find png pictures for you're book. And if it doesn't have a transparent background you have to go on background remover and have it remove it for you.

This Is my Fractured fairy tale, enjoy.

Advanced Questions On Cicadas

Kia ora bloggers,

When reading a book, have you ever been curious about something you were reading, and wanted to find out more to help you understand what you were reading better?  We have been learning about how important this is this week in Literacy.

When we read The Magic School Bus inside the human body’ I formed some advanced questions using ‘how’ and ‘why’.  I made sure they were open ended questions that would help me understand the book more.  An example of one of my questions was “Why are intestines coiled up?’ and I then researched and found out that an adults intestine is 7.5m long, so it needs to coil up so that it fits in the body.

Next we got to chose our own book to read out of our virtual library and we had to form 3 advanced questions about it.  Our create task this week was to share these in a creative way.  I chose to do it with Biteable and it was about a book called Cicadas.

Here are my questions the I made, enjoy.

Advanced Questions On Cicadas on Biteable.

I really enjoyed this task as it made me realize how important it is to do this when reading to understand the text better.

Do you ever do further research when you are reading a book to deepen your understanding?See you next time I post.Bye

Binary & ASCII

Kia Ora Bloggers

Today we are learning about Binary and ASCII.

Binary is a number system that uses 1’s and 0’s to represent all of our normal set of numbers.  You can use the place values as multiples of 2 to work out how to do it for yourself!  Try watching this video to give it a go yourself!

ASCII is set of encoded symbols that a computer uses to turn Binary into letters and other symbols from the English language (like what is on our keyboard).  I turned my initials ( O & F ) into binary numbers, and then turned those binary numbers into an ASCII code!  Using colours to represent the 1’s and 0’s, my initials in ASCII can be represented by the pattern you see in my image below!

What do you think?  Have you ever tried encoding anything in binary or ASCII?  Could you have a try for yourself?  Can you work out how to write my initials in ASCII from the pattern above?

Angles Adventure

Kia ora bloggers,

For numeracy today, we have started to learn about angles.

We learnt about 3 different angles today - acute (less than 90°), right angle (90°), and obtuse (larger than 90° but smaller than 180°).  We also learnt how to use a protractor to measure angles.  We know that we need to measure an angle from a vertice (a corner where two straight lines meet).

For our create task, we had to measure three different angles on the first letter of our name - can you  figure out if they are acute, right angle or obtuse?

Have you learnt the different angles? See you next time I post,Bye

Global Issues

Kia Ora Bloggers,

This week for inquiry we have made some word arts about all the global issues that we could think of. I have made some of these before they were about things I appreciate,my family, and my favorite things.

What Global Issues Can You Think About?

The Lonely Man

Kia ora bloggers,
This week for literacy we have been learning about inferencing and show not tell.  When we read something, we automatically start making inferences, so it is important when we write that we give clues in our writing that allow people to make inferences.  We want to show them - not tell them.

For example:
Paul was frustrated when he got to the bus stop and realised he had just missed the bus.  But instead I could write “Running as fast as he could, Paul turned the corner only to see the back of the bus as it pulled away.  Throwing his bag down on the ground and sighing out loud, Paul realised that he had no choice, but to sit and wait for the next bus to arrive - 20 minutes from now”  You can infer from me saying ‘throwing his bag down and sighing out loud’ that he is frustrated.

Our task was to create a video that accompanied a piece of writing about an elderly man.  We used Adobe Spark to do this.

Have a look at my video and see if you can you make some inferences about what I have written.

Do you think the elderly man is happy?

The Quest Of The Beebots

Kia ora Bloggers,

For Numeracy this week we have been looking at compass directions.  We have worked on reading maps using the 8 main directions - North, South, East, West, North-East, South-East, North-West and South-West and then we moved onto using Beebots and our knowledge of compass directions to get a Beebot through the grid to various locations.

We had to programme the Beebot with our own algorithm, using forwards, backwards, turn right, turn left and N, S, E, W.  It was important that we regularly tested our algorithm to check we didn’t need to de-bug (find a problem and fix it).

Here is an example of my algorithm: ⇑ west 2 squares ↶⇑ south 2 squares.

Have you ever written an algorithm for something?  Have you ever had to use a compass for something?

The Twits Inferences

Kia ora Bloggers,

This week we have been looking carefully at making inferences when we read or watch something.

What’s going on in this picture? Look closely at the image above or view it in a <a href="https://static01.nyt.com/images/2020/04/17/learning/VTS04-20-20LN/VTS04-20-20LN-superJumbo.jpg">larger size</a>, then tell us what you see by posting a comment. On Thursday afternoon, we will reveal more about the image and its origins at the bottom of this post.An inference is when we take clues from a text or image, and
add them to our thoughts or prior knowledge and make an inference.
For example,  when I look at this photo, I might make the inference that
this photo was taken in a food factory as everyone is wearing hair nets and this is required in all food factories.

The text that we read a snippet out of was ‘The Twits’ by Roald Dahl.
Once we had read the first few chapters where they described the main characters, Mr and Mrs Twit, we then had to make some inferences based on the clues that Roald Dahl had given in the text.

I used Google Draw to create a display of my inferences I have made about Mr and Mrs Twit.

Have you read The Twits before?  Do you agree with my inferences? What inferences would you make about the characters?

See you next time!

Survival

Hey Bloggers

In literacy we have been reading Going Solo by Roald Dahl. It tells his story from where Boy left off.

He went to Africa to work for The Shell Company and he has many adventures there. Some of these are really funny.
He then joined the RAF to fly in WW2.

We have recreated a part of the story where his plane crashes in the desert. He manages to survive although he is blinded by the crash and badly injured. He does get his sight back eventually.

Going Solo is a great novel that I would recommend you read.

Have you ever read Going Solo?see you next time I post, stay safe and stay at home,Bye
